Victron BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor

£124.99

The Victron BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor is a display-based battery monitor for DC systems where proper battery information needs to be visible in the vehicle as well as available through the VictronConnect app. It is a strong fit for campervans, motorhomes, auxiliary battery systems and practical off-grid installs where state of charge, current flow and remaining runtime need to be understood properly rather than guessed. With built-in Bluetooth, VE.Direct connectivity, a supplied 500A shunt and a programmable relay, it is a sensible choice for systems where app-only monitoring is not enough.

Overview

The Victron BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor is a display-based battery monitor for DC systems where proper battery information needs to be visible in the vehicle as well as available through the VictronConnect app. It is a strong fit for campervans, motorhomes, auxiliary battery systems and practical off-grid installs where state of charge, current flow, historical data and remaining runtime all need to be understood properly rather than guessed.

The BMV-712 Smart combines a physical display head with built-in Bluetooth, giving the user both at-a-glance in-vehicle information and app-based setup, configuration and historical review. That makes it a sensible choice where app-only monitoring is not enough or where the installer wants a cleaner customer handover with a dedicated visible readout already in place.

Why this product makes sense

The Victron BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor makes sense where battery monitoring is not just a background function but something the user actually wants to see easily during day-to-day use. That is particularly relevant in campervan and leisure systems where visible state-of-charge information helps users manage charging, understand load behaviour and avoid flattening a battery bank through guesswork or optimism.

Compared with the SmartShunt, the BMV-712 Smart adds a dedicated display head as well as a programmable relay and visual/audible alarm capability. That makes it the stronger choice where the system benefits from local indication and more direct user interaction, rather than relying entirely on a phone app.

It also remains properly integrated into the wider Victron ecosystem. Bluetooth setup and monitoring are built in, VE.Direct is included, and the additional input can be configured for second-battery voltage, midpoint monitoring or temperature measurement. In other words, this is not just a voltmeter with a nice face — it is a serious battery monitor for systems that are meant to be understood properly.

Typical applications

  • Campervan and motorhome leisure battery systems where visible state-of-charge information is useful in daily use.
  • Auxiliary battery systems where a display-based monitor is preferred over app-only monitoring.
  • Off-grid battery systems where current, voltage, amp hours and historical battery data need to be tracked properly.
  • Installations already using Victron chargers, solar controllers or GX devices where VE.Direct and Bluetooth integration are useful.

Installation and integration notes

The BMV-712 Smart requires both the display head and the supplied shunt to be installed correctly if the readings are going to be meaningful. As with any serious shunt-based monitor, all relevant system current needs to pass through the shunt in the battery negative path, otherwise state-of-charge calculations and historical data will drift away from reality.

The display head gives this monitor a different role from the SmartShunt. It is better suited to systems where the user wants direct in-vehicle information rather than relying on app access every time they want to check battery condition. That can make customer handover easier and daily use more intuitive, particularly for leisure systems used by more than one person.

If the wider system is built around Victron equipment, the BMV-712 Smart integrates cleanly via VE.Direct and Bluetooth. The additional input and programmable relay also make it more flexible than a basic monitor where the job is not only measurement, but also practical system supervision.
