Leisure Batteries

Leisure batteries are intended to run auxiliary loads such as lighting, pumps, control panels, refrigeration and habitation equipment rather than simply delivering a short burst of engine-starting current. In practical terms, this category mainly covers conventional lead-acid and EFB options for caravans, campervans, motorhomes and similar 12V auxiliary systems.

Compared with a basic starter battery, a proper leisure battery is built with repeated charge and discharge in mind. That does not mean every battery in this category behaves the same way, though. More conventional flooded leisure batteries are often best suited to simpler systems with regular hook-up or lighter off-grid use, while EFB batteries are designed to offer better cycle durability and faster charging where the duty is a bit more demanding.

If you are choosing between batteries here, the key things to compare are how much energy you actually need, how deeply the battery will be discharged in normal use, what charging system the vehicle has, and whether you need a straightforward replacement or something more cycle-tolerant. AGM and LiFePO4 sit in the wider leisure battery world as well, but they need to be chosen with more care because the charging behaviour, usable capacity and system expectations are different.
