Lithium batteries are used where low weight, high usable capacity and cycle life matter more than simply buying the cheapest box that says 12V on it. In practical campervan, leisure and off-grid systems, lithium usually means a battery that can deliver more usable energy for its size, recover charge faster and tolerate repeated cycling far better than many traditional lead-acid options.
That does not mean every lithium battery is automatically the right answer for every system. Lithium batteries need appropriate charging, proper low-voltage protection and the right supporting hardware around them. A good lithium system is excellent. A badly matched one is just a more expensive mistake.
If you are choosing between lithium batteries, the key things to compare are usable capacity, discharge capability, charging compatibility and how the battery will be protected and monitored in the wider system. In practice that often means looking carefully at features such as the integrated BMS, Bluetooth monitoring, low-temperature charging behaviour and whether the battery includes built-in heating. The goal is not simply to move to lithium because it sounds modern, but to use it where the system genuinely benefits from it.
