DC-DC Chargers

DC-DC chargers are used to charge one battery bank from another DC source in a controlled way, most commonly from a vehicle alternator to an auxiliary or leisure battery. In practical terms, they are the modern answer to split charging where battery chemistry, charging voltage and alternator behaviour actually need to be taken seriously.

They are especially useful on vehicles with a smart alternator, where a simple relay-based charging setup is often no longer enough. They also make good sense where the auxiliary battery chemistry needs a proper charging profile rather than whatever the vehicle happens to throw at it on a Tuesday.

If you are choosing between DC-DC chargers, the key things to compare are input and output voltage, charge current, battery chemistry support and how the charger is triggered and integrated into the wider vehicle system. The aim is not just to move current from A to B, but to charge the auxiliary battery properly without upsetting the vehicle or shortening battery life.
