Victron BMV-712 Smart Black Battery Monitor

£124.99

The Victron BMV-712 Smart Black Battery Monitor is a display-based battery monitor for DC systems where proper battery information needs to be visible in the vehicle as well as available through the VictronConnect app. It is a strong fit for campervans, motorhomes, auxiliary battery systems and practical off-grid installs where state of charge, current flow and remaining runtime need to be understood properly rather than guessed. With built-in Bluetooth, VE.Direct connectivity, a supplied 500A shunt and a programmable relay, it is a sensible choice for systems where app-only monitoring is not enough and the black finish suits the installation better.

Overview

The Victron BMV-712 Smart Black Battery Monitor is a display-based battery monitor for DC systems where proper battery information needs to be visible in the vehicle as well as available through the VictronConnect app. It is a strong fit for campervans, motorhomes, auxiliary battery systems and practical off-grid installs where state of charge, current flow, historical data and remaining runtime all need to be understood properly rather than guessed.

The BMV-712 Smart Black uses the same core monitoring platform as the standard BMV-712 Smart, but with a black front finish that can suit darker dashboards and cleaner black-trimmed installations better than the standard grey version. In practical terms, it is the same serious battery monitor, just with a different visual fit for the install.

Why this product makes sense

The Victron BMV-712 Smart Black Battery Monitor makes sense where battery monitoring is something the user actually wants to see easily during day-to-day use, not just check occasionally in an app. That is particularly relevant in campervan and leisure systems where visible state-of-charge information helps users understand charging, load behaviour and remaining capacity without relying on guesswork or a phone being to hand.

Compared with the SmartShunt, the BMV-712 Smart Black adds a dedicated display head as well as programmable visual and audible alarms and a relay output. That makes it the stronger choice where local indication and direct user interaction are part of the point, rather than relying entirely on app-based monitoring.

It also remains properly integrated into the wider Victron ecosystem. Bluetooth setup and monitoring are built in, VE.Direct is included, and the additional input can be configured for second-battery voltage, midpoint monitoring or temperature measurement. In other words, this is not just a cosmetic variant of a basic monitor — it is a proper battery monitor with a black display face for installs where the visual finish matters as well.

Typical applications

  • Campervan and motorhome leisure battery systems where visible battery information is useful in daily use.
  • Auxiliary battery systems where a display-based monitor is preferred over app-only monitoring.
  • Off-grid battery systems where current, voltage, amp hours and historical battery data need to be tracked properly.
  • Installations with darker dashboards or black-trimmed interiors where the black display finish suits the vehicle better.

Installation and integration notes

The BMV-712 Smart Black requires both the display head and the supplied shunt to be installed correctly if the readings are going to be meaningful. As with any serious shunt-based monitor, all relevant system current needs to pass through the shunt in the battery negative path, otherwise state-of-charge calculations and historical data will drift away from reality.

The difference versus the standard BMV-712 Smart is visual rather than electrical. That means product choice here is usually about the finish that best suits the vehicle or control panel, not a difference in monitoring capability.

If the wider system is built around Victron equipment, the BMV-712 Smart Black integrates cleanly via VE.Direct and Bluetooth. The additional input and programmable relay also make it more flexible than a basic monitor where the job is not only measurement, but also practical system supervision.

Image note

Apologies in advance that the gallery currently only includes one proper image of the black version. The remaining support images show the standard grey unit because that is all we can currently get hold of. Functionally they are the same, but if you want to picture the black fascia from every angle for now, you may need to use a bit of imagination.
