Victron Smart BatteryProtect 100A

£59.99

The Victron Smart BatteryProtect 100A is a Bluetooth-configurable battery protection device for 12V and 24V DC systems where non-essential loads need to be disconnected before the battery is dragged into damaging deep discharge. It is a strong fit for campervans, auxiliary battery systems and practical off-grid installs where automatic low-voltage protection matters more than hoping the user notices the battery is being quietly abused. With 100A continuous current capacity, VictronConnect programming and support for lithium/BMS-linked operation in the correct configuration, it is a sensible protection device for systems that need to be looked after properly.

Overview

The Victron Smart BatteryProtect 100A is a solid-state battery protection device for 12V and 24V DC systems where non-essential loads need to be disconnected before the battery is dragged into damaging deep discharge. It is a strong fit for campervans, auxiliary battery systems, off-grid DC installations and practical leisure electrical systems where proper battery protection needs to be automatic rather than dependent on the user noticing a number getting worse.

The 100A model sits in a useful middle ground in the Smart BatteryProtect range. It offers more current capacity than the smaller 65A unit, while remaining a sensible choice for many vehicle and auxiliary systems that do not need the physical size and capacity of the 220A model. For many real-world leisure and support systems, that makes it the practical option rather than the theatrical one.

Why this product makes sense

The Victron Smart BatteryProtect 100A makes sense where the battery needs protecting from over-discharge, but the system still has non-essential loads that would otherwise keep pulling current until the battery is flattened, damaged or simply unable to start the engine. It automates that protection and gives the installer or user more control over disconnect and reconnect behaviour than a crude low-voltage cut-off relay.

Bluetooth programming is one of the genuinely useful parts of the product, not just another thing that ended up in the spec sheet. Required engage and disengage levels can be set through VictronConnect, or one of the predefined voltage profiles can be selected using the programming pin. That means it can be adapted properly to the battery chemistry and system behaviour rather than just hoping the default setting is close enough.

It is also useful in lithium systems because it includes a dedicated Li-ion mode and can be controlled by a Victron BMS in the appropriate arrangement. That makes it more than a generic low-voltage disconnect box and gives it a proper role in systems where battery protection and BMS integration need to work together cleanly.

Typical applications

  • Campervan and motorhome leisure systems where non-essential loads need automatic low-voltage disconnect protection.
  • Auxiliary battery systems with DC loads that should not be allowed to flatten the battery bank.
  • Off-grid DC systems where battery reserve needs to be protected for critical functions.
  • Lithium systems where BMS-linked control of load or charge interruption is required in the correct configuration.

Installation and integration notes

The Smart BatteryProtect is a uni-directional device, which matters. Current can only flow from the IN terminal to the OUT terminal, so it must be installed in the correct orientation depending on whether it is being used to protect a load or interrupt a charger. It is not a magical two-way current referee and it will not appreciate being treated like one.

It should be installed in a well-ventilated location and preferably close to the battery, while still respecting the usual common-sense point that battery-adjacent does not mean directly above battery gases. Cable sizing and fuse protection still need to be done properly, because no battery protection device can compensate for bad wiring discipline.

There is also an important limitation around inverters and inverter/chargers: these should not be connected through the Smart BatteryProtect on their main DC input where reverse current conditions may damage the unit. In those cases, the Smart BatteryProtect should be used to control the remote on/off function of the inverter or inverter/charger instead, where applicable.
