Victron SmartShunt 500A

£79.99

The Victron SmartShunt 500A Battery Monitor is a compact, app-based battery monitor for DC systems where proper visibility matters but a separate display does not. It is a strong fit for campervans, auxiliary battery systems and practical off-grid installs where clean wiring, accurate battery data and straightforward setup are more useful than adding another panel to the wall. With built-in Bluetooth, VE.Direct connectivity and support for voltage, current, state of charge and historical battery data, it is a sensible choice for systems that need proper battery information without unnecessary clutter.

Overview

The Victron SmartShunt 500A Battery Monitor is a compact, app-based battery monitor for DC systems where proper visibility matters but a separate display does not. It is a strong fit for campervans, auxiliary battery systems and practical off-grid installs where clean wiring, accurate battery data and straightforward setup are more useful than adding another panel to the wall.

The SmartShunt is effectively a battery monitor without the usual dashboard hardware. Your phone becomes the display through the VictronConnect app, giving access to state of charge, voltage, current, amp hours, time-to-go, historical data and other useful battery information without adding extra clutter to the installation.

Why this product makes sense

The SmartShunt 500A makes sense where the customer wants proper battery monitoring but does not need — or does not want — a dedicated physical display. That makes it particularly useful in cleaner modern installs where app-based monitoring is perfectly acceptable and every extra panel, cable and cut-out is another thing to package, wire and explain later.

It is also a sensible alternative to display-based battery monitors in systems where the real priority is simply knowing what the battery is actually doing. State of charge, current flow, historical data and time remaining are all useful, but only if the monitor itself does not create unnecessary installation fuss. The SmartShunt keeps that side of the system tidy while still giving proper information.

The 500A model is suitable for systems with more substantial DC current than the smaller versions, making it a better fit where inverters, larger charging sources or heavier auxiliary loads are part of the system design. It also supports VE.Direct integration and can use its auxiliary connection for a second battery, midpoint monitoring or an optional temperature sensor.

Typical applications

  • Campervan and motorhome leisure battery systems where app-based monitoring is preferred over a separate display.
  • Auxiliary battery systems with inverters, chargers or heavier DC loads where a 500A shunt rating is the sensible choice.
  • Off-grid battery systems where accurate current, voltage and state-of-charge information is needed.
  • Installations already using Victron equipment where VE.Direct and VictronConnect integration are useful.

Key features of the Victron SmartShunt 500A

  • App-based battery monitoring using VictronConnect via built-in Bluetooth.
  • 500A shunt version for higher-current systems.
  • VE.Direct port for GX device and Victron ecosystem integration.
  • Measures voltage, current, amp hours, state of charge and time-to-go.
  • Stores historical battery and system data for performance review.
  • Auxiliary input can be used for second-battery voltage, midpoint monitoring or an optional temperature sensor.
  • Suitable for a wide range of battery chemistries including lithium, AGM and flooded batteries.
  • Clean installation with minimal extra wiring and no separate display head.

Installation and integration notes

The SmartShunt must be installed correctly in the battery negative path if the readings are going to mean anything. In practical terms, all relevant system current needs to pass through the shunt, otherwise the monitor is only seeing part of the story and the state-of-charge calculations will drift into fiction.

The 500A version is generally the better choice where inverter loads, larger chargers or higher-current auxiliary systems are involved. It also uses M10 shunt bolts rather than the smaller hardware used on the lower-current model, so cable termination hardware should be selected accordingly.

If the wider system is already in the Victron ecosystem, the VE.Direct port gives a clean integration path into GX-based monitoring and VRM. If not, VictronConnect via Bluetooth still provides the core functionality most self-builders and installers actually need.
